Today on World Mental Health Day I wish to bring awareness to our own mental health and well-being..
When we fail to protect our own mental wellness, it can lead us down a slippery path that may result in chronic stress, burnout, anxiety and depression.
Looking after our mental health is as important as looking after our physical health. I would like to invite you to consider what positive steps you could take to care for yourself..
Here are some suggestions:
Let’s get physical! - exercise is proven to improve our mood, and when done in nature you get the extra feel good boost from the environment around you.
You are what you eat!- By eating a healthy, balanced diet, avoiding high processed foods, we nourish our mind and body giving it an opportunity to be it’s best self.
Cheers!- Alcohol can mess around with our mood, worsening anxiety, depression and can have a negative effect on our brain function.
Zzzzz!- Insufficient sleep plays havoc with our ability to fully function, leads to poor focus and emotion processing, lowers our mood, causes irritability, increases anxiety and depression, worsens other health conditions and has a negative effect on brain function. There is evidence that sleep deprivation can lead to the development of Alzheimer’s disease.
R n R! - Rest and relax..Taking time out each day to rest and replenish is good for our physical and mental health. Constantly ‘doing’ is exhausting and can lead to burnout. We can prioritise our own self-care by simply ‘being’. Taking time out to read a book, listen to music, enjoy a meditation or a massage, nourishing our mind, body and soul. Ahhh..
