This underestimated, common ‘weed’ found in the hedgerows, countryside, roadside and your garden is something to treasure rather than trash!
This herb is full of nutrients; Vitamins A, B complex, C, D, K and the minerals boron, calcium, chromium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium and silica. It also contains fatty acids, essential amino acids, chlorophyll, polyphenols, tannins, carbohydrates, sterols, terpenoids, carotenoids, polysaccharides and isolectins.
Nettle’s properties are known as alterative, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-rheumatic, astringent and a nutritive.
It is the aerial parts of stinging nettles that are used in herbal medicine.
It is recommended and used by herbalists for treating the following:
Iron deficiency anemia.
Urinary conditions ; by flushing out the urinary tract of harmful bacteria present in UTI’s, useful in treating men with benign prostatic hyperplasia [enlarge prostate], reducing discomfort and improving urinary flow, my husband can vouch for it’s effectiveness!
Reduces blood sugar levels and sugar cravings.
It is known to prevent and treat osteoporosis.
It’s anti-rheumatic properties are known to slow down rheumatoid disease progression.
It’s anti-inflammatory properties are known to be used for rheumatoid disease and allergic rhinitis.
It is known to reduce blood pressure and improve blood flow through the circulatory system.
It encourages optimal health by enhancing metabolism and is active in eliminating waste from the body.
Historically, it’s stinging properties were used externally. The painful joint was stroked with the stinging leaves, this brought increased blood flow to the area, bringing with it oxygen and nutrients and helping flush away waste, this effect was known to reduce inflammation. This photo shows today's harvest, which is now in the dehydrator in preparation to make a tasty herbal tea, which I and my husband enjoy daily!
