What you can do to improve constipation and help with regular bowel evacuation....

Tips and suggested medicinal herbs for constipation

Constipation is a condition we may all suffer from now and then. It is generally recommended that we empty our bowels at least once a day for healthy evacuation of waste, hormones and toxins in our body.

Some tips on improving regularity are:

Increase water consumption to keep well hydrated, which can soften the stools for ease of passage.

Avoid caffeine loaded beverages like tea and coffee, as these tend to dehydrate our digestive system.

Increase dietary fibre by consuming fruit, vegetables, whole grains and legumes.

Avoid or reduce high fat content foods like meat, cheese and ice-cream as these are low in fibre, slowing digestion.

Ensure you are active daily, physical movement aids the digestive system by encouraging the food to pass more quickly through the large intestine, so less water is absorbed, creating softer stools.

Food sources of laxatives; prunes, psyllium seeds, flaxseeds, pectin.

Medicinal herbs that are known for their laxative effects:

Anise seed, Burdock root, Celery seeds, Chamomile, Dandelion root, Liquorice, Senna, Slippery Elm, Spearmint leaf, Wild Carrot and Yellow Dock

root.

Keep moving!

Please be aware that some medicinal & culinary herbs can be contra-indicated in pregnancy, breast feeding, present medical conditions and current medications.

Please note that ALL herbal laxatives are contra-indicated in pregnancy except senna.

It is advisable to seek advice from your Primary Healthcare Provider and a qualified herbalist, before taking any herbal remedies.

My advice is general, not intended for any one particular individual, so in taking these herbs, you do so at your own risk.
